What In-Floor Pans Offer

In-floor shower pans integrate a dedicated shower area into your van's cabinetry layout, sitting flush with the floor while keeping water drainage simple. They work best in layouts with a dedicated bathroom zone and sufficient cabinetry structure to support them. Pans come in two sizes: regular pans for comfortable standing room, and slim pans for space-constrained bathrooms.

Unlike standing stalls that demand full enclosure framing, in-floor pans let you use whatever containment works for your space—a simple shower curtain, a folding enclosure above it, or even an exterior shower port paired with minimal interior spray.

Regular vs. Slim Pans

Regular pans offer wider base and more comfortable standing space, useful when your bathroom layout can spare the footprint. Slim pans fit tighter bathrooms while maintaining functional drainage and foot room. Both versions slope toward a drain point for gravity drainage or can be fitted with accessible drain valves positioned on the warm side of the van wall.

Choice depends on your layout. In a Sprinter with generous bathroom cabinetry, a regular pan feels natural. In a Transit or ProMaster with tighter footprints, a slim pan preserves walkway space while still providing functional bathing.

Drainage and Water Management

The critical detail with in-floor pans is slope: drain positioning should direct water toward the lowest pan corner at minimum 1/4 inch per foot. This prevents standing water that causes odor, algae growth, and freeze damage in cold storage.

Some builders integrate a small in-floor pan for pre-rinse, paired with the main shower curtain enclosure above it—this simplifies drain routing and prevents water from pooling in low spots.

Proper system design allows gravity draining directly to gray tanks, or includes accessible drain valves if gravity routing isn't possible. Position drain valves on the warm (interior) side of the van wall so they don't freeze in winter storage.

Installation Considerations

In-floor pans require solid floor framing and proper waterproofing around the pan perimeter. The installation itself is straightforward—positioning the pan, securing it, and running drain lines. Total build time is shorter than a full standing stall since you're not framing walls or permanent enclosures.

Water containment depends on whatever enclosure you pair with the pan. If using a shower curtain, ensure it's high quality and sealed at corners. If pairing with a FOLD Shower or other rigid enclosure above the pan, water management becomes more predictable.

Space and Layout Integration

In-floor pans work well when your bathroom design already includes a dedicated zone. They don't consume vertical wall space the way standing stalls do, making them compatible with shelving, medicine cabinets, or towel racks above. This lets your bathroom stay functional beyond just showering.

Slim pans in particular allow bathrooms in short-wheelbase vans to include a shower without dominating the entire room, preserving space for toilet, sink, and storage.

Winterization

Before sustained freezing, drain all water from the pan completely. This is non-negotiable: standing water in the pan will expand and damage plumbing, seals, and the pan itself. Accessible drain valves positioned on warm walls make this straightforward—a quick release before storage prevents freeze damage.
