ARTICLE: Wheel Well Tanks Explained: Left, Right, and Center
Last updated: October 22, 2026
What Do Left, Right, and Center Mean on a GoCode Wheel Well Tank?
Left, right, and center describe where most of the body of the tank (the offset) sits relative to the wheel well, not which side of the van it goes on. A center tank straddles the wheel well evenly. A left tank puts the offset to the left of the wheel well, and a right tank puts the offset to the right. Pick based on your layout, not on driver or passenger side. GoCode offers wheel well and undermount tanks for Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, and Ram ProMaster vans.
Left vs. Right Is NOT Driver vs. Passenger
Left and right do not mean driver side or passenger side. They describe the tank’s offset when you face the wheel well. A left tank has the majority of its body on the left, and a right tank has it on the right. Either one can go on either side of the van.
Center Tank
The center tank example in the video is a 24-gallon tank with equal offsets on both sides of the body (TR-C-24). It measures 4 1/2" of offset on each side, so it straddles the wheel well and centers on it.
Left Tank
The left tank has most of its body on the left side of the wheel well. The example used in the video is the TR-L-24 water tank.
Right Tank
The right tank is the mirror of the left, with most of its body on the right side of the wheel well. The video uses the TR-R-24 water tank.
How to Choose the Right Tank for Your Layout
Start by deciding where you want the bulk of the tank to sit. In the video, Luke puts the water on the driver’s side and wants the offset of the tank to the left of the wheel well, so he picks a left tank.
Next, measure from the rear of the van to the wheel well. In the video, Luke used GoCode's Transit D-Pillars so he measured from those to the wheel well. That measurement is 13". That’s enough room for the tank’s offset of 9 1/2", so the left tank fits.
Then check what’s left over. With the tank pushed tight against the wheel well, Luke still has 3 1/2" for plumbing and the cabinet wall. GoCode recommends leaving a little space instead of pushing the tank toward the back of the van.
When to Choose a Right Tank Instead
If you want room on the other side of the wheel well, like for pumps at the rear, choose a right tank so the body offset is to the right. With the right tank pushed fully against the cover, the video shows 12 1/4" of open space between the tank offset and the GoCode D-Pillars.
Key Takeaways
Left, right, and center describe the tank’s body offset, not driver or passenger side.
Center tanks sit evenly over the wheel well. Left and right tanks shift the bulk to one side.
Measure from the rear of the van to the wheel well before choosing.
Leave a little space for plumbing and your cabinet wall.
Choose left or right based on where you want open space for other components.
